HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Bowie falters in 3rd

The maddening part of softball is this.
It takes just one bad inning to foul things up, and that’s exactly what happened for Bowie during Tuesday’s District 3A-9 game against Paradise.
The Panthers plated five runs in the top of the third, and Bowie only managed to score two runs in response as Paradise won 7-2.
“They hit the ball in the gaps,” Bowie head coach Brant Farris said. “They didn’t hit it at us. Their hitters were doing very well.”
Farris said Paradise did an admirable job of making adjustments the second time through the batting order against Bowie pitcher Kellbie Throckmorton.
Runs and hits were far and few between for Bowie, and that was another factor in the Lady Rabbits’ downfall.
“I don’t think we were ever out of the ballgame,” Farris said. “We couldn’t get runners over and we weren’t able to get timely hits behind the runners that were on base. We weren’t able to get the big hits.”
Bowie stranded 10 runners on base, creating plenty of frustration.
Paradise pitcher Reagan Taylor is also a hard thrower, and Bowie couldn’t quite catch up to her offerings.
Bowie stands at 10-10, 3-1 in 3A-9. Read more in the weekend Bowie News, including the complete box score.

Blind taste tests, better seafood

Lent has just ended and if you observed it in any way, strictly or somewhere in the middle, you probably felt it. That slow shift in how you cook, what you reach for, and how often you stand in the kitchen wondering what else there is besides peanut butter and pimento cheese. But there is something about going through a season like that that resets your perspective.
You come out the other side appreciating things you did not think twice about before, and sometimes you discover a few new ones along the way.
As a kid, the frozen seafood we ate came in a rectangular box and answered to the name fish sticks.
They were breaded within an inch of their life, cooked until vaguely crisp, and served with enough ketchup to make you forget what you were eating.
They were not great. They were fine, which for a long time was about the best you could say for most frozen fish. And that stuck with me.
