The Saint Jo girls’ track and field team earned second place at the Conference 1A Area track and field meet on Saturday at Ponder High School.
“I was really proud of how our girls competed,” Saint Jo head coach Chad Tallon said. “We lost a 40-point individual from last year’s team, and knew it would be an uphill battle to win another area championship. Our young kids competed, and gave us a chance to win.”
Forestburg had the highest finishing boys’ team, scoring 95 points for fourth place.
“We are very pleased with the area results,” Forestburg head coach Steve Sandusky said. “We knew we had a good chance at being successful. We did the best we could, and we earned everything.”
Prairie Valley, Bellevue and Gold-Burg also provided highlights and qualified plenty of runners for the Conference 1A Region 3 meet scheduled for May 1-2 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.
Gold-Burg’s lone area qualifier is freshman Shelby Horton in the discus.
“It’s going to be a great experience for her,” Gold-Burg head coach Jay Johnson said. “She’s had less of an opportunity outside because of the weather, so she’s been working on her technique inside. I think her conditioning helped her.”
Prairie Valley head coach Jack Williams was proud of the girls’ 400-meter relay and efforts from sprinter Paxton Edwards and jumper Alec Ducharme on the boys’ side. Read more, and see a complete list of area qualifiers plus team standings, in the mid-week Bowie News.
