Bowie School District practices lockdown drills

Bowie Independent School District’s four campuses went into lockdown Friday, but thankfully it was all in the name of safety as staff, students and police took part in drills.
Letters went out to parents throughout the district to inform them of Friday’s exercise to avoid any unnecessary alarm within the community. Principals explained that school safety is an ever evolving topic as the world changes around us and one aspect is being prepared in the event of a lock down.
Superintendent Steven Monkres said during the past few weeks since the Florida school shooting where 17 people were killed, the staff has been coordinating with the Bowie Police Department on active shooter training and modifying the campus emergency procedures.

Early deadline for Nov. 30 Bowie News

The Bowie News will have an early deadline for its Nov. 30 edition due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
All news and advertising must be turned in by 5 p.m. Nov. 26 to insure inclusion. The Bowie News office will be closed Nov. 28-29.
The Bowie News staff wishes everyone a wonderful holiday with friends and family.

Medical needs community meeting on Nov. 19

The second community meeting on needs for an emergency room or hospital in Bowie is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the Bowie Community Center.
This is the second meeting to discuss these needs following the closure of the Faith Community Health Center emergency room on Oct. 6, just shy of a year of operation. More than 200 people attended that first meeting, where discussion centered on the creation of a taxing district to support any sort of medical facility.
Citizens in the Bowie area are encouraged to attend and take part in these discussions.
