HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Prairie Valley boys fall too far behind in loss
By ERIC VICCARO

All it takes is one bad quarter to really foul things up.
That’s what both the Prairie Valley High School boys’ basketball and Midway girls learned in District 1A-21 action on Tuesday evening.
Midway’s girls scored just two points in the third quarter as Prairie Valley recorded a 37-31 victory on its home court.
The Bulldog boys were outscored 13-6 in the second quarter and that lack of offensive punch carried over into the third quarter as Midway triumphed 60-44.
“We can’t seem to string together four good quarters,” Prairie Valley boys’ basketball coach Jack Williams said. “We struggle with that.”
Williams said Prairie Valley couldn’t keep up with Midway because the Falcons did a better job of rebounding than the Bulldogs.
“We weren’t able to get many rebounds,” the coach commented.
Prairie Valley’s boys made the game more respectable in the fourth quarter by using a full-court press. With up-tempo play, the Bulldogs tallied 19 points during such time.
Mitchell Eldred and Matt Suarez both tallied 14 points for Prairie Valley. It marked a season-high point total for Eldred.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
