HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: For Bowie, it’s ‘silence of the bats’

For the Bowie High School softball team, Monday’s 6-0 District 3A-9 loss could have been turned into a movie.
The film could have been called, “Silence of the Bats.”
Paradise pitcher Reagan Taylor shut down Bowie, holding the Lady Rabbits to three hits while striking out five.
“Taylor was throwing hard,” Bowie head coach Brant Farris said. “She did a nice job of shutting our bats down.”
Bowie left only six runners on base, another indication the Lady Rabbits weren’t generating enough firepower.
The Lady Rabbits had chances to score, but they were few and far between.
Henslee Ogle singled and Addy Cook walked in the second inning. Ogle was caught attempting to steal home. And Cook was left at third base after an Ashlyn Vanwey groundout.
Tristin Hopson was picked off first base in the fourth inning. Later in the inning, Taylor McCarty was stranded at second and Ogle at first as Cook flied out to left field.
Vanwey reached on an error in the fifth inning, Hopson singled in the sixth, and Cook in the seventh. But none of them scored.
Maylie Short took the loss, allowing five runs – only two earned, in part because of three Bowie errors – on six hits with one walk and two hit batters. She threw 57 pitches, 38 for strikes. Kellbie Throckmorton pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Read more, and see the box score, in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
