Bowie boys get revenge wins against Jacksboro, City View
The Bowie Jackrabbits started the second round of district play last week and picked up two great wins against opponents they previously had lost to.
The Jackrabbits beat Jacksboro 61-49 and City View 60-46 as they battle for a playoff spot.
Bowie came out of the first round of district play with a 2-4 record coming off a disappointing loss at Iowa Park. The Jackrabbits started district play 0-3, but all of those losses had come by a combined total of eight points. With that in mind, Bowie knew it could beat any team in district if it played well as the team got ready to play all of the team’s again.
The Jackrabbits did not start the game well against the Tigers on Jan. 21. It was a low-scoring start to the game. Bowie trailed 10-4 as they struggled initially against Jacksboro’s physicality inside.
The Jackrabbits changed their defensive approach in the second quarter, mixing in some full-court pressure to force some turnovers which led to some transition opportunities. Bowie outscored the Tigers 12-6 to tie the score up at 16-16 at halftime.
The offensive pace picked up quite a bit for both teams in the second half, just the Jackrabbits proved better at it than Jacksboro. One thing that helped was more fouls being called which meant more free throws after only six were attempted in the first half.
Bowie initially fell behind 27-23 midway through the third quarter before closing strong thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Bradly Horton to open up a 41-33 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Jacksboro tried to fight back, cutting it to 49-44 midway through the period.
The Jackrabbits were put on the free throw line down the stretch and made the Tigers pay as they made the majority of them as they pulled away.
Bowie would end up winning 61-49.
The win was a good one with the Jackrabbits going on the road next to play a high-scoring City View team.
From the start it was back and forth, but it was not a light speed or super high-scoring pace. Bowie led 13-12 after the first quarter and it seemed like the Jackrabbits were a bit more cognizant of trying to use their size advantage to their advantage on offense a bit more.
Bowie led 32-28 at halftime and pulled away in the second half thanks to lights out defense. The Jackrabbits limited City View to only 18 points in the second half while Bowie did not slow down much at all.
The Jackrabbits led by double-digits at the end of the third quarter 49-39 before winning 60-46.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach
Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.
Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.
“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”
Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.

Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.
Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district
Culture. It’s a beautiful word.
Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.
After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.
Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
