When Miles Shaffer woke up after his June heart transplant, he laid his hands on his chest and could feel the thump, thump of his new heart.
He wondered, should I call it “my heart?” He was unsure and overcome with tears of gratefulness for this special gift he had been given.
At the age of 18 Miles Shaffer was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, a daunting directive no matter your age. Ten years later he is recovering from a June 16 heart transplant.
Health hurdles were nothing new to this young man, who had already come to terms with a disease that came on when he was an adolescent and would eventually put him into a wheelchair – a form of Muscular Dystrophy.

Read the full feature on this young man’s recovery in the weekend News.
