HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Eagle girls break little sweat

Bellevue High School first-year girls’ basketball coach Bryan Goehring should be pleased with recent developments for the Lady Eagles.
The team is showing signs of cohesion, and that was on full display in Tuesday’s District 1A-21 victory over Prairie Valley 68-28.
“I thought Tuesday night was the first consistent game the girls have played for all four quarters,” Goehring noted. “Our defense got stronger as the game went on and our offense stayed steady throughout the game.
“The girls keep working hard in practice,” the coach added, “and keep their eyes on the goal of this season, which is to make the playoffs.”
Even though there are a slew of district games remaining, it’s becoming clear Bellevue’s girls resemble a team that will be featured on the postseason dance card.
The game was foreshadowed by a medical emergency involving Prairie Valley senior post player Amber Wood, who fell ill during the boys’ game.
Prairie Valley and Bellevue were knotted at 8-all in the first quarter when Hannah McWilliams connected on a pair of back-to-back buckets. McWilliams first made a baseline shot, and followed that with a layup on the Lady Eagles’ next possession.
Bellevue didn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
