HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Powerlifters are ready for season

This weekend at Timber Creek High School in Keller, you’ll hear clanging sounds and athletes putting extra breath into their performances.
Why?
Well, today marks the start of the high school powerlifting season across the state of Texas – and Bowie will be competing in the Timber Creek Invitational.
Nocona will begin the regular season in powerlifting next Saturday at the Chico Invitational, and the Jackrabbits will be there, too.
“I restarted the girls’ program in 2008,” said Monte Sewell, who currently assists the powerlifting program as Bowie’s strength and conditioning coordinator. “The girls (Katie Walker and Katie Stallcup) asked if I’d start a team, and I said ‘absolutely.’”
Walker and Stallcup brought forth a petition and had more than 25 people sign it.
Powerlifting is similar to wrestling in that athletes trudge out of bed early on a Saturday morning just to get weighed.
Some powerlifters must eat and others go run on a track just to make sure they can compete in a given weight class.
Three different lifts are judged – the dead lift, the squat and the bench press.
There are several weight classes for both boys and girls. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
