The first-year Bowie High School bass fishing team will wrap up the season today and tomorrow with the Texas High School Bass Association regional championship.
Seven Jackrabbits will compete.
Lane Hopson and Hadley Morgan will form one two-person team. Kollin Gillaspia and Jake Rhyne will also combine for another team. Spenser Meekins will join forces with Jared Stone and Mitch Sanders will fish solo.
Scott Wolsey will serve as the boat captain for Hopson and Morgan. Rusty Edwards will lead Sanders. Bret Meekins will guide Spenser Meekins and Stone and team coordinator Trent Gillaspia will be the boat captain for his son, Kollin, and Jake Rhyne.
“We’ve had our bumps in the road, but we’ve been able to compete each time,” Trent Gillaspia said regarding Bowie’s inaugural season. “All in all, we’ve performed well and it’s more than I could have hoped for.”
For a new program, what Hopson and Morgan did this season was astounding. The two freshmen scored 1,142.50 points for eighth overall in the West Region.
“Lane and Hadley did more than we would have thought,” Gillaspia said. “Scott (Wolsey) is an experienced boat captain, and it’s been advantageous for those two boys, and they keep improving.”
Fresh off catching nine pounds of fish at Possum Kingdom earlier this month, Morgan and Hopson will be honored during a banquet tonight at Whitehouse High School. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
