OUTDOORS: Boaters warned of DWI during Memorial Day
Outdoor opportunities abound in North Texas as the mercury rises, whether it is boating, fishing, all-terrain vehicle riding or simply cooling off at your favorite swimming hole.
As people flock to the outdoors to unwind, Texas Game Wardens are focused on making your outdoor experiences safe and enjoyable.
Whether you are boating, fishing or swimming at a public lake or river, there are some State Laws and information people should be aware of: Alcohol plays a role in 50 percent of boating accidents.
A person can be arrested for boating while intoxicated if he or she is impaired or has a blood alcohol content of .08 or above while operating a vessel.
In addition, any person on a boat can be arrested for public intoxication if he presents a danger to himself or others.
A United State Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device is required for every person on board a boat – regardless of size.
Children 12 years of age and younger are required to wear a flotation device on boats under 26 feet while the boat is underway.
Boats sized 16 feet or more are required to have a U.S. Coast Guard approved Type IV cushion. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
