The Amity Club presents a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Wellington State Bank meeting room to honor the 100th anniversary of its fellow member of the General Federation of Women’s Club and Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, The Maids and Matrons Club. The bank meeting room is located at 1301 State Highway 59 North, and the public is welcome to attend. What follows is a brief look at the history of this longtime community organization.
On Sept 26, 1918, at the home of Jettie Donald, a committee from the Thursday Club, composed of Miss Donald, Mrs. Callaway, Mrs. Potter, and Mrs. Keyes met to organize a new club for younger women, whose purpose was to promote literary culture, afford stimulation of intellectual development and to aid war work for World War I.
The Thursday Club was organized and Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs was federated in 1906.
In 1919 the Maids and Matrons of Bowie was born. The club joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1919.
Mrs. Paul Donald served as the first president, with 20 charter members. In just a few months, the meeting day was changed to Wednesday afternoons and has remained on Wednesdays to this day.
